Why Men Hate Going to Church

Stansbury recently hat tipped me to a site called PeaceBang's Beauty Tips for Ministers.

The title alone grabbed me, and sent me down memory lane recalling summer camp conversations with my girlfriends that would begin with a prompt such as, "Is it a prerequisite for pastors' wives to get bowl cut hairstyles, swear off make up and wear tents for clothes?"

I had to click on this link.

And then I read the post discussing a new book called Why Men Hate Going to Church. (Click here.)

Wonderfully provocative subjects that have long been ignored in Christendom.

There's much too much to be said on the topic of Christian women's fashion and men avoiding church like they might the dentist. In the meantime, Portia feels quite reassured in her recent shopping endeavors. Frumpy does not equal holy. There. It's been said.

there's nothing wrong with looking hot (albeit in an appropiate way) for God!

This site is not only hysterical, but astute in her advice and observations. Her post "Sins of the Shins" is great:

"So I'm at an ordination today and I look across the church and see my dear colleague Who Shall Remain Nameless looking really very spiffy in a sports coat and tie and a nice pair of slacks and shoes. But he's got his leg crossed and I see a wide expanse of WHITE GYM SOCK on his leg and I clutch my heart and fall over dead in the pew.

So I'm dead now. I'm writing this from the Hell of having seen a perfectly well-dressed man wearing WHITE GYM SOCKS with his outfit.

My sister said, and I quote, "That's an abomination unto the Lord."

I'm wondering if she's Episcopal or Lutheran. Either way, really enjoyed her site.

Well Pirate,
You might want to check out converting to Judaism. A Local Jewish temple rents out the main sanctuary at my church during their High Holy days. Even the young boys wear suits. It's quite a sight, indeed.

Laura Ingraham was talking about dressing for church on her radio show; she said there were a sea of flip-flops at Mass on Sunday. Her contention was not that she didn't like flip-flops, but that she would rather not see men's toes at church on Sunday morning. :-)

I agree with her. But it swings the other way as well; it's more than distracting to sit behind a woman wearing a spaghetti strap crop-top and hip hugger jeans on Sunday.

Dennis Prager's view on this puts it in perspective: dressing up for church is a sign of respect. One wouldn't dream of wearing jeans to an elegant dinner party, so why wouldn't we want to wear our best when we worship the Lord, the Creator of the universe?
